In the first edition of FC Barcelona Women’s Camp 2017, held in Barcelona during August, I had the opportunity to lead a workshop with the 30 enrolled players. At the Camp, the girls, between 12 and 17 years old, had the chance to know and learn about the FC Barcelona model as well as enjoying the city of Barcelona. The digital revolution, how to leverage social media platforms and opportunities for women’s football were the main topics we shared.

With the denomination of ‘Scoring goals in Social Media’, the workshop built the strategy and process that can lead women’s football to grow to the next level:

  1. Telling stories. Spreading thoughts, experiences and ideas that resinate with the digital audience is the first step to create a long-term relationships.
  2. Connecting with fans. That is, empathising and sharing valuable content so followers become regular and active storytellers of your main idea.
  3. The third step consists of achieving relevant awareness so the cause or idea can expand among the sufficient amount of people need to reach the final step.
  4. Once the idea is shared, accepted and promoted by fans, it will be able to make create a positive impact on whatever it is aiming to. Then, the ultimate goal is to leave a trail that provokes a change for good in the environment.

Apart from these steps, exemplified with the Ice-bucket Challenge, we also learnt about the necessity for users of being authentic both on and off the pitch, respect and responsibility must be present in everything we post. Lastly, we must not forget that magic or remarkable memories happen far from mobile phones but in real life.
