Even the best professionals get fired.
Recently, a good professional I know from a top sports property was dismissed. He had a strong track record, a solid network, and the full support of his team.
After several years of working for the organisation, he was even surprised by the cold treatment in his goodbye.
It didn’t matter how late he stayed up, how early he arrived, or how many weekends he worked.
His expertise, knowledge and attitude couldn’t avoid the decision.
Every company transitions and changes in management, objectives and roles eventually affect us all.
Don’t take it personally. Sometimes we are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The next day, we realise how most of the attention, generosity and support were for the chair we sat in.
So, this is a friendly reminder about preparation before our time comes:
Track your journey. Update your career highlights and top results regularly on LinkedIn and personal career presentations (CV and projects portfolio).
Help others. Make introductions, offer guidance, recommend others to job positions, share interesting content and make time to listen to others’ peoblems.
Keep learning. Be updated with day-to-day news, attend industry events, read content from top professionals in your area and take new courses.
Be present on LinkedIn. Post recurring content, connect with other peers and engage with others’ projects. Be visible and offer valuable insights.
Make the most of it. Being aware that company changes eventually affect us all, let’s try to become better professionals every day.
Our work for the employer is a business transaction, in which we are paid to grow the business.
And that is not bad, it’s the way it is.
Despite your solid contribution, be prepared to deal with the situation when your work has been delivered or your role offered to someone else or no longer needed.
Even the best get fired, changing jobs it’s part of our careers.
Let’s be ready so that when change comes, we can embrace it with confidence.
